Frost Dragons

Native to mountainous regions, frozen plains and areas of frequent snowfall, the Frost Dragon is as beautiful to observe as it is terrifying to be the focus of. The distinction between these beasts and their kin is the method in which their corpses become solid, never melting ice rather than the common rock-like scale dragons usually are born with. As Dragons are as sentient as any Gryphon, Demon or Humanoids, they are capable of decisions beyond their nature. Such is the case of the Frost Dragons, as their method of transformation involves allowing the elements to fill their being entirely, casting out all but their souls, for the power it brings at the expense of being restricted to certain living conditions. The transformation is reversible, yet only once, after such a time the dragons are stuck as they are- primal and though possessing of predatory cunning, nothing resembling their former intelligence or memories. For those dragons lusting for power or simply an escape, driving their souls and selves from their corpses is an easy thing to do and be on their way. Yet for those dragons who wish to conserve their being, should they wish to one day return to their former selves, they must have a piece of themselves to plant their entities into, such as a scale, bone or claw, yet whatever the item, it’s commonly known as a catalyst or, fragments. The normal occurrence, the most sensible then for the dragons is to find easily defensible or concealed spots to hide their catalyst.

In some instances, dragons have formed mutually beneficial relations with other creatures, sharing the space of living as well as resources for a constant watch over their fragment. Should the fragment be taken, the dragon despite any amount of distance or cloaking mechanism, is always capable of knowing how to reach it’s catalyst, as well as knowing the intent of the carrier, should any contact between fragment and epidermis occur. In the rarest of instances, whether by own volition or by instances seen as necessity, such as a destroyed corpse, dragons have been known to perform the transformation, yet rather than watch their corpse as an outsider, allow creatures they see fitting to absorb their entities, sharing a conscious, as would a suckerfish to shark. The relationship formed in this case could be ended however, as the dragons- mere shells of their former selves without corpses would be able to do little more than quicken overall metabolism, enhance senses and toughen sometimes chance pupil size and colour. Other than that, they only offer a second voice in the hosts’s thoughts, incapable of actually seizing control over even the simplest and smallest of infants minds. A notable one time study proved that the process by which dragons may be placed into another being can only occur twice; initial transfer from catalyst to an willing host, to another willing host. Should the target make any attempt to defend itself, as it is for unknown reasons, impossible for dragons to enter unknown to anything’s corpse, their essence is obliterated.

Should a dragon under go the transformation to frost dragon and mate with another, as is the case more recently, the hatchlings gain the benefits their parents had sacrificed their souls to gain, yet without any cost. This new generation of dragons could prove quite unstable and unpredictable, as the dragons leading up to the new generation’s time had learned through harsh experience with humanoids and their like how to live without war, the new generation will have nearly a 50-50% division between parents who’d kept their sanity and souls, to pass on their wisdom and knowledge. That would be a chilling thought indeed, agree many folk, though the matter is a heated debate among mages and commoners both. Some believe this the time to exterminate the now and quickly rising unstable breed of beast before boundaries and respects need be re-learned for the developing younglings wishing to test their powers. Others wish to selectively hunt down those feral dragons, brave men with little thought and big egos. One thing is agreed however- a means of dealing with the impending threat must be executed before the hatchlings get to the intermediate stage, the stage of most notable arrogance and aggression, as a war with the dragons is one thing neither the west nor the north could manage alone given their current states.
